Iridium Rental FAQ

1.   Are incoming calls to the Iridium satellite rental phone really free?

Incoming calls to the Iridium satellite phone are free to the satellite phone holder, but the expense for the call falls upon the caller. In most cases, people calling the Iridium satellite phone will incur an international long distance fee for this call.

2.   Is voicemail included with a satellite phone rental/pager rental?

Yes! All Iridium phones are set up with a generic message for people to be able to use your rental satellite phone. If necessary, FSC provides you with instructions on how to personalize your satellite phone’s voicemail.

3.   Can I purchase insurance for the satellite rental phone/pager?

FSC is not a licensed insurance carrier, but does offer loss/damage protection coverage on Iridium satellite rental equipment. For a weekly fee, customers can cover the Iridium rental phone only in case of loss, damage, or theft. Please see our Iridium rental agreement or contact us directly for specific policy details.

4.   Will I need more than a standard rental kit, i.e. do I need any accessories?

Extra Batteries/Solar Charger
If you are traveling without the ability to charge or if your trip is for three weeks or more you may consider taking an extra Iridium battery as back up. For trips with an unknown duration or those lasting several months, a solar charger would be a great idea. Although the battery is the smaller and cheaper option, some situations/excursions will require solar power.

Fixed Mast Antenna
If you are traveling on a boat or are stationed in a building, the Iridium fixed mast antenna will be your best option for using the phone inside without a clear line of sight to the sky. This antenna works best when posted on a PVC pipe and then the cable is run the antenna to the phone. Each rental antenna comes with several feet of cable, but if a specific length is needed it can be produced upon request.

Mobile Magnetic Mount Antenna
If you are traveling in a moving vehicle, the Iridium mobile magnetic mount antenna will be your best option for using the phone inside without a clear line of sight to the sky. This antenna works best when mounted on a flat metallic surface unobstructed by buildings or trees. The cable attached to this antenna runs down through a window/door and to the phone. Each rental antenna comes with several feet of cable, but if a specific length is needed it can be produced upon request.

Data Kit
If you will need to connect to the Internet while away, the Iridium data kit would be a great option. The data kit hooks directly from the phone to your laptop via a specialized custom cable.

**To connect using the data cable, the laptop must have a 9-pin serial connection. If your computer has only USB connections, you will need to purchase a PCMCIA card from Socketcom.com to make use of the kit. Please keep in mind the speed of the Iridium data kit is only 9.6kb with compression from FSC data software CD. Thus, if you do not need to display pictures, it may be helpful to disable all pictures.

5.   Can I send or receive text messages from my satellite rental phone (SMS and SMS-MO)?

6.   How do I connect to the Internet from my satellite rental phone?

To connect to the Internet you will need to rent an Iridium data kit. The data kit hooks directly from the phone to your laptop via a specialized custom cable.

**To connect using the data cable, the laptop must have a 9-pin serial connection. If your computer has only USB connections, you will need to purchase a PCMCIA card from Socketcom.com to make use of the kit. Please keep in mind the speed of the Iridium data kit is approximately 9.6kb with compression through FSC's data software CD.
